So, ChatGPT is down, and everyone’s in a bit of a pickle. This morning, users woke up to find that the AI mate we all rely on for a quick chat or help with work was off the grid.
Reports started coming in around 1:30 p.m. EST yesterday, with heaps of folks hitting up Down Detector to see if it was just them. OpenAI’s like, “Yeah, we’ve got a high error rate thing going on with ChatGPT, the API, and even Sora. We’re looking into it, hang tight.”

This isn’t the first time we’ve seen ChatGPT take a nosedive. Remember back in June 2024 when it and a bunch of other AI services went down? And just after they dropped Sora, there was another hiccup. But those got fixed pretty quick.
OpenAI’s status page is where it’s at for the latest, and they’re saying it’s something with an “upstream provider.” They’re working on it, but no one’s saying when we’ll have our AI buddy back.
Social media’s gone wild with people moaning about having to think for themselves or, gasp, use Google like it’s the dark ages. One post even said, “Time to start making memes since ChatGPT’s out for the count.”
Also, we saw a lot of developers sharing how the are not even able to code now, as the got used to Chat to do all the annoying work for them.

It’s hitting hard for those of us who use ChatGPT for everything from writing emails to doing research. Some are joking about having to use their own brains again, but really, we’re all just waiting for the fix.
With ChatGPT down, maybe Google’s Gemini will get some love, but let’s be real, we want our go-to AI back. OpenAI’s been busy with new stuff like Sora and voice features, so here’s hoping they sort this out ASAP.
We hope that the upcoming ChatGPT 5 won’t cause the same issues.
